Dennis Wellner is a founding principal of Populous (formerly HOK Sport Venue Event). His primary focus for the past 25 years has been the design of stadiums for National Football League teams. He also has extensive experience in the design and management of multipurpose facilities that serve as both sports and entertainment venues. Many of these buildings include and perform integrally with convention and conference centers, retail and entertainment venues.
Dennis's current project is the expansion of Arrowhead Stadium for the Kansas City Chiefs; to bring the facility up to current NFL standards. He led the recently-opened the new multipurpose stadium for the Arizona Cardinals, University of Phoenix Stadium. The project's blend of high design and multipurpose use together creates a world-class facility. It features both a moveablestadium floor for event conversion and aretractable roof for ultimate versatility.
Dennis has worked with 30 of the league’s 32 teams, including such previous stadium projects as Gillette Stadium, Reliant Stadium, Alltel Stadium, Bank of America Stadium, Cleveland Browns Stadium, Heinz Field and the recent expansion of Sun Life Stadium.
Dennis received his bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of Kansas. He is a registered architect and a member of the American Institute of Architects. He was recently named the one of the most influential people in sports facility design and development by Sports Business Journal.
